How are you involved with Casson & Friends?

Three years ago I was thrilled to receive a call from Tim, and the phone call got better when he asked me to be involved with a new project that was a bit like 'The Dance WE Made' but in a non performance setting.

His words were 'as a choreographer yourself' blah blah 'dream team' blah blah I can't remember the rest as it was all filtered through my female brain.

I think I said yes and was excited but I didn't tweet about it so who knows. For the past three years I have been creating and performing together with the two most wonderful (other than Tim) humans involved in dance, Robert Guy and Katie Green. The project was named 'Selling Secrets', and the harvesting of ideas from members of the public began. (Please note that members of the public are just like us).

We created three shows over three years in three settings, a hotel, a pub and an office. The shows took the audience around the site exploring the stories and characters these sites offered from the 'real' stories we collected.

The audience found themselves being part voyeur and part participant. But now it has ended and I'm trying to put my life back together. Will I ever see this 'dream team' again..?

What do you love about dance?

If you had asked me when I was younger I may have said something obvious like 'because it makes me feel free, it is my voice' etc but I am now in conflict with dance.

Dance is a pain in the arse.

Oh ok I still love it. I love the joy on the faces of the little people I teach dance to (through my learning and participation company Puppik Dance). I love watching people that enjoy dancing. I love dancing for myself.

Are you still reading this? Well done!

How are you/have you been involved with Casson & Friends?

I've been on several adventures with Señor Casson over the past 5 years which include: commissioning Selling Secrets in Bournemouth, bringing him to Aberdeen and commissioning Choreospondance, engaging in long and luxurious conversations on topics of authorship and participation and when visiting London staying on the good ship Casson aka HMS Klasina.

What do you love about dance?

Dance amplifies our ability to connect with the self and others. Movement feeds our bodies, can be found in all cultures and levels of society and is inherently democratic.

What are you working on at the moment?

I'm collaborating with a musician and together we're creating a Radio Ballad about dance (inspired by Ewan MacColl) - so I'm interviewing lots of people and in the midst of editing. You can listen to me online/on the radio every Friday night at 9pm on Forest FM with my show that specialises in film soundtracks or read reviews of some of the dance I've seen with Nick Minns. Last month I was in conversation with Seeta Patel at 2Faced Dance Company's The BENCH - an event with oodles of debate and conversations surrounding the issue of gender disparity for female choreographers working in contemporary dance.

Follow Ian on Twitter, visit his website and read his dance reviews at Writing About Dance.

How are you/have you been involved with Casson & Friends?

I worked with Casson & Friends for the 3 instalments of the wonderful 'Selling Secrets' project that took place in Bournemouth from 2013-15.

What do you love about dance?

I have no short answer to this question! I've spent a lot of time over the past few months transferring content to a new website, and this has given me the opportunity to look back over 10 years of working as a professional dance artist. It's such a privilege to have had this opportunity to work in the world of dance, to tell stories through dance, and to communicate my love of dance to other people, many of whom are now starting their own careers in the arts. I'm convinced that dance has a unique capacity to engage all individuals, regardless of their ability or experience, and I hope I can continue working on projects that enable me to test that out, like 'Selling Secrets', but also my own work which takes me into museums and heritage sites.

What song always makes you dance? (We are creating a spotify playlist!)

ELO's Mr Blue Sky, I Love To Boogie by T-Rex, Happy by Pharrell Williams (until I made it my alarm tone on my phone, big mistake!), I Will Wait by Mumford and Sons to name just a few.
